Our program utilizes the Orton-Gillingham Method of tutoring which is a multisensory structured language approach. We begin with systematic and explicit instruction of foundational skills. All sessions are taught one on one using this evidence-based method for developing and introducing our carefully designed sequence. The program usually takes about 100 lessons to complete. It consist of two fifty-five minute sessions per week. Because we are a nonprofit we can offer this highly individualized tutoring for only $25 per session. Our calendar of instruction follows the school year with a four or five week session in the summer. It is important to commit to making every session to retain these new skills once they have been introduced. Every sessions consist of introducing a new skill while continuing to review skills already introduced. Our goal is for each child to master the skills introduced improving confidence in overall reading skills.
We strive to create an engaging supportive learning environment where it is okay to make a mistake. Dyslexia, the most prevalent learning disability undermines more than the ability to read. It undermines a child's confidence and self-esteem. As one young man once told me "it's hard to feel like the dumbest kid in the class". Our children with dyslexia all have an area of strength, talent, or untapped potential. While it is imperative to improve reading, spelling, and writing skills, it is also critical to identify a child's special interest or talent. Most of our tutors know someone who has experienced the loneliness of dyslexia so it becomes a priority to work with our students, forming a team, to truly learn to manage/overcome the challenges of dyslexia.
